Beam
Also called: Largeur, bau, bau maximal, maître-bau, max beam
Maximum width of the boat; for a multihull, from one float to the other.
Beam, the maximum width, directly affects stability: a wide boat resists heeling better and can carry more sail. But it adds wetted surface and weight.
Class rules often cap beam; on multihulls it is one of the most important measurements.
