Mainsail
Also called: Grand-voile, GV, main, grand voile
The main sail, set behind the mast and held by the boom.
The mainsail stays up on every point of sail; its area is reduced by reefing as the wind builds. On racing boats it often has a square top to gain area aloft. The sail number is printed on it.
