Generali
History
Assicurazioni Generali is an Italian insurance company founded in Trieste on 26 December 1831 as the Imperial Regia Privilegiata Compagnia di Assicurazioni Generali Austro-Italiche, promoted by Giuseppe Lazzaro Morpurgo. It adopted its current name in 1848 and by 1856 had become the largest insurer in the Austrian Empire.
Over the following decades the group expanded abroad, with agencies around the Mediterranean, in central and eastern Europe, the Americas and the Far East, and it became an Italian company in 1918 when Trieste joined Italy. In 1963 it launched the assistance service Europ Assistance, and in 1996 it created Generali France by merging La France Assurances with Concorde Assurances.
Led by CEO Philippe Donnet since March 2016, the group is listed on the Milan stock exchange and operates in about fifty countries. It is also a sports sponsor, having backed the Barcolana, the international regatta in the Gulf of Trieste, for over forty years. In French offshore racing it was title sponsor of Isabelle Joschke from 2014 to 2017.
