Shroud
Also called: Hauban, haubans, shrouds, gréement textile
A wire or rope that holds the mast up from the sides.
Shrouds link the upper mast to the sides of the boat (the chainplates), passing over the spreaders. In racing, they are often synthetic fibre (textile rigging), lighter than steel. A broken shroud usually brings the mast down.
