AIS
Also called: Automatic Identification System, système d'identification automatique, MMSI
A system that broadcasts the boat's position, course and identity to nearby ships by radio.
AIS (Automatic Identification System) lets vessels see each other on their screens, with an alarm when there is a collision risk. Each transmitter is identified by a nine-digit MMSI number. It is mandatory in offshore racing.
