Collision avoidance system
Also called: Système anticollision, OSCAR, anticollision, détection d'OFNI
Cameras and software that spot obstacles ahead of the boat: ships, debris, whales.
At over 20 knots, hitting a floating object can tear off an appendage. Systems combining visible and thermal cameras with artificial intelligence, such as OSCAR, scan the horizon and alert the sailor, or even alter course. Some races make them mandatory.
