Round-the-world race
Also called: Tour du monde, circumnavigation, tour du monde à la voile, around the world
A race around the planet, generally via the three great capes and the Southern Ocean.
A round-the-world race leaves Europe, sails down the Atlantic, circles Antarctica through the Southern Ocean and climbs back up the Atlantic. It is raced non-stop (Vendée Globe, single-handed) or in legs (The Ocean Race, crewed). The fastest non-stop crewed circumnavigation is the object of the Jules Verne Trophy.
