IMOCA founded
The International Monohull Open Class Association is founded to run the 60-foot Open monohull class.
1998 · Event
Recognition by World Sailing
The IMOCA class is recognised by World Sailing, the international sailing federation.
2000 · Rule change
Self-righting test becomes mandatory
Since 2000, every boat must prove before a race start that it can right itself without outside help, and show effective internal watertight bulkheads and enough buoyancy in case of capsize or water ingress.
