Appendage

Appendages are the boat's underwater wings and fins. They stop it from sliding sideways under the wind (keel, daggerboards), steer it (rudders), stabilise it (ballast) and, since the 2010s, lift it (foils).

It is one of the areas where racing boats evolve fastest: the same boat may change foils or rudders several times over its life, in successive yard periods.
