Float
Also called: Flotteur, ama, outrigger
A side hull of a trimaran, smaller than the central hull.
A trimaran has two floats, one on each side of the central hull. Upwind or reaching, the leeward float carries much of the boat's weight: it is long and buoyant so that it does not dig in (a nosedive, when its bow plunges into a wave).
On foiling trimarans, each float houses the case of a foil, which lifts the boat.
