Stern
Also called: Arrière, poupe, tableau arrière, transom, jupe
The back of the hull; the transom is its flat, vertical end.
On racing boats, the stern is wide and cut off square by a flat transom. That width gives stability and a lifting surface for planing.
It is often where the rudders and the hydrogenerator are fitted.
