Average speed
Also called: Vitesse moyenne, moyenne, vitesse sur l'eau, vitesse sur le fond, SOG, speed over ground
Distance divided by time, either along the theoretical route or over the distance actually sailed.
Two averages coexist: along the great circle (the official course distance divided by the time) and over the ground (the distance actually sailed, which is longer). The second is always higher; records are usually compared on the first.
